TUAREG BLANCO (9b/+) | FIRST ASCENT

"TUAREG BLANCO (9b/+) | FIRST ASCENT" is a rock climbing video (19 minutes) published by Alexander Megos on January 26, 2025 with 120K views. Available to watch free on CouchClimbs.

In January 2025, German climbing prodigy Alexander Megos unveiled the first ascent of Tuareg Blanco, a long-standing project tucked into the sector Espadelles at the legendary Margalef crag in Spain. The route had resisted all attempts for years, drawing only a select few willing to engage with its demanding sequence of tiny pockets and razor-sharp holds. Even Ramon Julian Puigblanque, one of the most accomplished climbers in history and a Margalef specialist, came agonizingly close before a finger injury ended his bid. Graded 9b or potentially 9b+, Tuareg Blanco stands as one of the hardest lines in a crag already packed with world-class testpieces. What makes this film essential viewing is the weight of the story behind the send. Megos had been chasing this project for three years, and the footage captures both the raw difficulty of the climbing and the emotional relief of finally closing the chapter. Coming off a frustrating stretch in Kentucky with no results, the ascent carries real stakes and genuine release. The movement itself is a spectacle, precise and explosive on some of the most technical terrain sport climbing has to offer. Beautifully shot and tightly edited by Chris Hanke, this 19-minute film does justice to a route Megos believes deserves to be recognized as a true classic.

For years this project in the middle of the sector Espadelles remained unclimbed. Only a handful of people tried to conqer this little piece of rock with little pockets and sharp holds. Three years ago I tried the project for the first time. Since then Ramón Julián Puigblanqué tried the route and almost succeeded in doing the first ascent until he got a little finger injuries and stopped trying. After unsuccessfully spending so much time and energy on the project in the middle of November in Kentucky I was eager to finally send something hard again. Tuareg Blanco will hopefully see the attention in future that it's deserves. It is a completely independent line with unique moves and beautiful surrounding. A true classic!
