The Historic First Ascent Of Realization AKA Biographie - The First 5.15

"The Historic First Ascent Of Realization AKA Biographie - The First 5.15" is a rock climbing video (24 minutes) published by REEL ROCK on July 18, 2026 with 48K views. Available to watch free on CouchClimbs.

On July 18, 2001, Chris Sharma stood at the base of a limestone wall in Ceuse, France and changed climbing history forever. After nearly 100 attempts across four years and three separate trips, he topped out Realization — also known as Biographie — to complete what would become the world's first consensus-rated 5.15 (9a+). This documentary from Reel Rock captures the full arc of that obsessive pursuit, restored from the original tapes and recut for the climb's 25th anniversary. What makes this film essential viewing is the intimacy and rawness of the original footage shot by Brett Lowell, Josh Lowell, and Jorge Visser over weeks on the wall. The centerpiece is the complete, uncut send filmed in one continuous real-time shot — a rare and electric document of a climber at the absolute frontier of human possibility. Whether you watched it first in Dosage Volume II or are discovering it now, this restored version is a landmark piece of climbing cinema that captures not just a grade, but the relentless will it takes to rewrite what's possible.

On July 18, 2001, Chris Sharma made the first ascent of Realization (also known as Biographie) in Ceuse, France. Although he didn't grade it at the time, it became the first climb in the world with a consensus rating of 5.15 (9a+ in the French system). He had made perhaps 100 attempts across three trips spanning four years. Cinematographer Brett Lowell spent many weeks documenting Sharma's process on the climb, and it was featured in the film Dosage Volume II. Now, on the 25th anniversary of this iconic ascent, we've restored the footage from the original tapes and recut it for posterity, including the full, realtime send in one continuous shot. Filmed by Brett Lowell, Josh Lowell, Jorge Visser. Still photography by Jim Thornburg and Roberto Fioravanti.
